The Call - Red Moon - Vinyl album on MCA Records 1990

The Call - Red Moon - Vinyl album on MCA Records 1990

Garth Hudson (born Eric Hudson) in London, Ontario, on August 2, 1937, was the greatest virtuoso talent in that stellar cast of musicians known as the Band. The full-bearded, genial artist may also be the most fascinating personality to emerge from that legendary group (certainly the most inscrutable). Hudson's Lowrey organ, from which he could coax a variety of sounds, from gospel to classical, was a centerpiece of the Band's sound. He also played an arsenal of other instruments -- examples being his accordion work or his memorable saxophone passages on such Band staples as "Tears of Rage" and "Unfaithful Servant." Hudson's signature, however, had to be the dramatic organ opening of "Chest Fever" (from the Band's debut, Music From Big Pink), during which his extensive classical background shone. (In the movie The Last Waltz, the other members claim Hudson gave them music lessons in the early days of the group.)
Skin Yard - Inside The Eye - Grundge vinyl album on SST Records

Skin Yard - Inside The Eye - Grundge vinyl album on SST Records

Possibly the least appreciated of Seattle's early grunge pioneers, Skin Yard never broke out of the deeper levels of the underground. Unlike most of their peers, they never made it onto the Sub Pop roster, nor did their key personnel go on to breakout stardom with other bands. They did, however, contribute drummers to acts like Soundgarden and the Presidents of the United States of America, and guitarist Jack Endino became the local scene's pre-eminent producer and engineer, helming records for nearly every Sub Pop luminary. Endino and bassist Daniel House formed Skin Yard in 1985, at the dawn of the grunge era. They were joined by vocalist Ben McMillan and drummer Matt Cameron, the latter of whom had played with House in a group called Feedback. Skin Yard made their live debut in June 1985, and first appeared on record later that year with their contribution to Deep Six, a C/Z Records compilation that marked the vinyl debut of other important early grunge artists, including Green River, the Melvins, Malfunkshun, and Soundgarden.Initially tabbed as something of a sister band to Soundgarden, Skin Yard's early sound shared the thick, molten, psychedelic sludge of Chris Cornell and company's formative years.
Cellophane - Hang Ups - Vinyl album on Jungle Records 1994

Cellophane - Hang Ups - Vinyl album on Jungle Records 1994

The Mint label, an imprint of Jungle a&r by Graham Combi, developed into a loose family of linked artists leading from the first two signings, Mercury Rev and Mutton Gun. Mutton Gun, whose David Boyd went on to run the successful Hut Records at Virgin, featured Dean Wareham on their album as well as various Chills. David introduced Dean to Mint, resulting in the solo single Anesthesia in-between his Galaxie 500 and Luna projects.
October Faction - S/T - Vinyl album members of Black Flag SWA Wurm Descendents on SST Records

October Faction - S/T - Vinyl album members of Black Flag SWA Wurm Descendents on SST Records

October Faction was one of the many off-shoots of seminal punk band Black Flag, led by guitarist Greg Ginn. A supergroup of SST alumni that mixed jazz and hard rock mainly as an instrumental vehicle. Never an actual working band as much as an occasional jam band, they made two albums both released on the SST label in 1985 and 1986. The unofficial lineup included contributions from Bill Stevenson, Henry Rollins, Joe Baiza, Chuck Dukowski, Tom Trocolli, Greg Cameron, and the ever-present ringleader, Greg Ginn.
Boz Scaggs - Other Roads - Vinyl album on Columbia Records

Boz Scaggs - Other Roads - Vinyl album on Columbia Records

Returning to the U.S., Scaggs promptly headed for the booming psychedelic music center of San Francisco in 1967. Linking up with Steve Miller again, he appeared on the Steve Miller Band's first two albums Children of the Future and Sailor, which received good reviews from music critics. After being spotted by Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner, Scaggs secured a solo contract with Atlantic Records in 1968.
Velma Frye - I Am To Someone - Vinyl Album

Velma Frye - I Am To Someone - Vinyl Album

Velma Frye is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist with a strong background in classical and popular styles, and was flown from Florida to Minnesota eight times in the late 1980's to be a guest and "the band" on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion." Velma shared the stage with such notables as host Garrison Keillor, film director Sydney Pollack, humorist Roy Blount, Jr., musicians Leo Kottke, Doc Watson, Johnny Gimble, Greg Brown, Jean Redpath, the Nylons, Chanticleer, and Beausoleil. She returns to public radio as a frequent guest.
Killer Dwarfs - ST - UK import LP on Attic Records

Killer Dwarfs - ST - UK import LP on Attic Records

Only a year after its formation, the Killer Dwarfs saw their self-titled debut album hit store shelves. It took three years for a sophomore offering, Stand Tall, to follow. During those years, the band lost two members, Fodero and Trewin, who were replaced by Hall and Mayer. There were other big changes, too, like the giving up of a record contract and a move to the Maze Records label. The group spent time touring through its Canadian homeland, and crossed over into the United States to a new crop of fans. When the band's music videos landed on MTV, Epic Records soon took notice.
Spencer Brewer - Portraits - Vinyl LP on Narada Records

Spencer Brewer - Portraits - Vinyl LP on Narada Records

Northern California-based pianist Spencer Brewer released a series of records on the Narada label starting in the 1980s. His pleasant, pop-flavored style and strong melodic sense make for nice easy listening music that often suffers under the scrutiny of concentrated attention. His collaborations with other artists on the Narada label are stronger.
The Coup De Grace - Vinyl album on Red Decibel Records 1990

The Coup De Grace - Vinyl album on Red Decibel Records 1990

Originally released on Twin/Tone in 1990 but reissued on Caroline's Red Decibel subsidiary in 1993 (possibly because Dave Pirner of then-hot Soul Asylum had produced the album), the self-titled debut by the Coup de Grace is a mixture of hardcore thrash and speed metal. The two styles fit together so well -- after all, Metallica and the Melvins are just two fruits from the same Blue Cheer-meets-Black Sabbath tree -- that it's at times impossible to distinguish which elements of which songs come from which antecedent.
Bernie Krause - Jungle Shoes - Vinyl album biophony The Weaver on Ryko Records 1989

Bernie Krause - Jungle Shoes - Vinyl album biophony The Weaver on Ryko Records 1989

Bernie Krause (born 8 December 1938 in Detroit, Michigan) is an American bioacoustician. He coined the term, "biophony". In a previous career as a musician, he was a member of The Weavers, and was one of the first players of the Moog Synthesizer in the 1960s. He formed Beaver & Krause with fellow synthesist Paul Beaver (who had played the instrument on a Monkees recording, "Star Collector"), to make electronic music featuring the Moog and other instruments.
